Eriona Hysolli completed her PhD work at Yale University working on derivation and characterization of human induced pluripotent stem cells and the role of micro RNAs during reprogramming. She then went on to do postdoctoral training in George Church’s lab where she published studies on Genomically recoded bacteria - mammalian co- culture systems, multiplex genome engineering approaches for human genome recoding. Furthermore, in his laboratory she derived the first reprogrammed African elephant iPSCs and led the woolly mammoth de-extinction efforts, work that she carried forward at Colossal Biosciences as head of biological sciences. There she led the efforts to de-extinct the woolly mammoth, working on Proboscidean comparative genomics and reference genome assemblies, multiplex editing in embryo for de-extinction, Asian elephant iPSC derivation and stem cell technologies, as well as biobanking efforts for elephant conservation. In 2023, she was selected as one of Time100 Next luminaries for her work on mammoth de-extinction.
John-Clark Levin is research lead for Google AI visionary Ray Kurzweil. At Kurzweil Technologies, he conducts foresight about the roadmap to artificial superintelligence, including focus on applications to the life sciences.
Dr. Tamsin is an evolutionary biologist known for her original research on baboon social evolution, and a leading author in the field of Biomimicry, innovation inspired by nature. She has provided leading-edge Biomimicry innovation to a global and Fortune 100 clientele for the past 15 years, and is the Founder of TEEM Innovation Group LLC, a company providing developmental tools and experiential education to life-minded leaders.
Reynolds has spent much of her career in two different worlds that both center their business around foresight. Whether working with scientists at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory or strategists at BMW Designworks, she has used design to create new pathways and find untapped opportunities in new and non-traditional places.
Dimitri Deheyn is in the Marine Biology Research Division at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. Deheyn is a marine biologist who has been studying ecotoxicology for more than six years. Originally from Belgium, he received B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees at the Free University of Brussels where he first became involved in research on marine organisms producing bioluminescence.
Dr. Daniel Wangpraseurt is an interdisciplinary marine biologist whose research bridges coral reef science, engineering, and biophysics. He leads the Coral Reef Ecophysiology and Engineering Lab at Scripps and also serves as the co-founder of Hybrid Reef Solutions, a startup that aims to address the need for effective and sustainable solutions to protect coral reefs.
Keolu Fox Ph.D., Kānaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) is an assistant professor at University of California, San Diego. Dr. Fox’s multi-disciplinary research interests include genome sequencing, genome engineering, computational biology, evolutionary genetics, paleogenetics, and Indigenizing biomedical research.
Ying grew up in Las Vegas and discovered her love for plants when she moved from the desert to California. She earned her Ph.D. at Stanford, studying the genomics and physiology of salt and heavy metal tolerant extremophytes. As a postdoc at the Salk Institute, she identified genes related to altering root morphology to engineer bigger, deeper roots that capture carbon for the Harnessing Plants Initiative. She has traveled all around the world observing how plants adapt to extreme environments, and loves weird and wacky plants! Ying is passionate about harnessing the power of Rare Flora to pave the way for a climate-resilient future, where plants, people, and our planet thrive together. Phytomining, an eco-friendly approach, has tremendous potential to revolutionize our impact on the environment.

We use SU to give them insight into the technological possibilities of the next decade and the fast interchange of those possibilities in relation to the ethical questions they present. There are several takeaways they all mention after the program. First, they are shocked about everything that is technologically possible that they were not aware of and begin thinking about how that is going to impact their business models and their businesses within the next 1-2 years. They suddenly see what is possible, what is new for them, what impact it might have for their business and what they can learn from developments and innovations in other industries. This is one of the great insights and takeaways from SU.
SU’s custom executive program changed us, creating a breakthrough moment and revolutionized the way we think about the massive challenges and opportunities we are embracing.
The SU course in 2016 was the most inspiring educational experience I have had in my life. The key players themselves in the field of AI, robotics, 3D printing, cybersecurity, self-driving cars, energy, and healthcare presented their vision and recent developments. After this week I realized that the future was much closer than I thought. We actually implemented some innovations in our organization shortly after attending SU. Without this experience, we most likely would have waited to do so.
